Sonoran tradition

An interesting route that takes us to visit the main points visited by the Jesuit missionary Eusebio Francisco Kino.
 
The route includes the following communities:
 
  • Caborca.
  • Pitiquito.
  • Oquitoa.
  • Átil.
  • Tubutama.
  • Magdalena de Kino.

LA PROVEEDORA

Archaeological site

5 kilometers from the center of the city of Caborca, northwest of Sonora, is the La Proveedora Archaeological Zone, a place with hundreds of dark stones with pre-Hispanic engravings.

Although the origin and authors of the recordings on the stones are unknown, it is said that there are 6,000 figures hundreds of years old on the site.

The figures tell stories of the life of the ancient inhabitants of the area.

PUERTO LOBOS

Santo Tomás, El desemboque

Located 94 km southwest of Caborca.

In this small fishing town you can take boat trips to explore the coast to the south and find beautiful places like the bay and Cape Tepoca.

The marine and beach landscapes are repeated tirelessly in these latitudes, in the sea waters it is possible to capture specimens of different marine species.

 

 

PUERTO LOBOS DUNES.

Between the sea and the desert

Puerto Lobos is a town and minor port in the Mexican state of Sonora located on the coast of the Gulf of California, belonging to the municipality of Caborca.

Virtually virgin, since it only has 2 small hotels, in addition to its low influx, make this place an incredible place to visit.

Historical Route in Caborca

Located 76 km southwest of Caborca.

A historical, natural and gastronomic route full of flavor, culture and tradition.

You learn about the history of the vine in the desert, the types of grapes, while you walk in vineyards.

MUSEUM MHEC

Visit the Historical and Ethnographic Museum of Caborca.​

The Historical and Ethnographic Museum of Caborca is located in the heart of the oldest neighborhood, in Pueblo Viejo, in front of the majestic and emblematic Temple of La Purísima Concepción.

It has murals of great characters from Caborca, as well as four rooms, 2 permanent: Ancestral Room of the Tohono O’odham and the Historical Room; 2 temporary where art and history are exhibited.

Also known as Pápagos de Caborca, Sonora, they are one of the indigenous communities that inhabit the state, as are the Mayos, Yaquis, Pimas, Guarijíos, Seris, and the Kikapoos, who have lived in the mountain region for approximately 100 years.

The Tohono O’odham people or “people of the desert” reside in rural communities close to the border line with Arizona such as: San Francisquito, El Cubabi, Ejido El Bajío, Pozo Verde, Quitovac. Being the ejido El Bajío the place where the highest concentration of this community is located.

BIOSPHERE RESERVE

El Pinacate

Located 2 hours from Caborca

You can enjoy one of the largest ecological reserves in the country, a volcanic shield formed 4 million years ago, which is made up of more than 400 volcanic cones and more than 500 thousand hectares of dunes.

It is recommended to do the tour of craters visiting the famous El Elegante crater and the Cerro Colorado crater. During this tour, you can see various landscapes from the choya forest, the lava river, the sahuaros and ocotillos. There is fauna but a lot of luck is required to be able to appreciate it. There are +40 species of mammals, 200 of birds and +40 types of reptiles.

We recommend that you first visit the Schuk Toak Museum so that you can learn more about the formations, nature, and landscapes that you will be able to observe on the scenic route of craters.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL TREASURE

Trincheras, Sonora

This archaeological zone was a complex settlement that included agricultural infrastructure, artisan neighborhoods, elite residences, ceremonial structures, astronomical observatories, ritual precincts, plazas, and a population that exceeded 1,000 inhabitants.

The most important characteristic of this site are the more than 900 terraces on the slopes of the hill, some with a length of more than 300 m, although the majority measure between 13 and 30 m.

There are also more than 300 rectangular and circular stone structures that reach up to one meter in height.

We recommend you visit the Museum first so you can learn more about the archaeological zone.
